Chamomile, Roman

Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial herb favored for fragrant groundcover, lawn alternatives, and mild teas. In Pennsylvania (growing zones 5 to 7), it thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soil, making it a hardy addition to local herb gardens.
 
Roman chamomile is a low growing herbaceous perennial  in the Asteraceae (daisy) family.  It is native to Europe and western Asia.  Its roots are creeping and sturdy which allows it to spread and keep a firm foundation.
 
This plant grow 1 to 2 feet tall and needs 2 to 4 inches of space when planting to allow its greatest potential. It blooms in the summer on those lazy, summer days and can even bloom into the fall. Provide part sun to full sun in well-drained, moist to dry soils. Wear gloves as it may cause contact dermatitis in some people.  
Fragrant white flowers in summer into fall and the foliage is fragrant and evergreen.
 
Consider using this problem free plant as a groundcover in a children's grade, cottage garden or near a rock wall as it has a meandering habit. The delicate-looking flowers make for a wonderful edging for any border in your garden or planted along a patio or walkway so the calming fragrance can be enjoyed.
